Mercruiser Distributor Cap Problems

Usually a faulty distributor rotor and cap will produce a few symptoms that alert the driver that service may be required.

If you have no spark there are several things which can be at fault. When the humid air reaches the distributor cap is collect there. This is how i got it back to the right position. Engine misfires can occur for a number of reasons.

Below is a quick list of items which can cause a no spark condition from the coil. It recommends taking out the wire screens located somewhere on the base of the distributor. The rotor was off a 1 4 turn. Gm has a technical bulletin included in the new cap that speaks of a lack of ventilation which can cause pre mature corrosion of the cap.

There are 2 other boats at my marina with similar engines that were tuned up at the same time. Checking your distributor rotor and cap to see if they need to be replaced is one way to ensure that everything is in solid working order. I have a 3rd cap now with the same problems. I have a ski boat with a pcm 2003 gm 5 7 350 ci marine motor that uses the vortec distributor cap it is flat and the plug wires come off of the sides.

If you own a late model mercruiser engine in your boat you re almost guaranteed to run into one of these common problems. I suggested the mechanic source new. Replaced the distributor cap with a new mercruiser cap and had same issue again 2nd time out. I only get.

A bad key switch. My distributor was out of adjustment on my mercruiser. Make sure the other end of the tester is attached to a good clean ground. Remove the main coil lead from the center of the distributor cap and install the spark tester.

As far as my experience goes it caused by condensation gathered during winter storage and sometimes just that the caps are poorly made or designed at least.
